Best Christian Faith Books Reviews
Live No Lies: Recognize and Resist the Three Enemies That Sabotage Your Peace
Written by John Mark Comer and named as a New York Times bestseller, the Live No Lies book was published on September 28th, 2021. It gained mass popularity given that it is a relatively new title at the time of writing.
It is available in three different formats – audiobook, Kindle, and hardcover, with the second and the third coming at around the same price.
Review
The author of this book is well-recognized for his previous bestseller – The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry. After reading this classic, we had great expectations for his new publication, and we weren’t disappointed.
It is safe to say that this book will help you face your inner demons and fight all the common lies that diminish peace and freedom.
According to the author, the biggest issue is that we all lie to ourselves. Accepting that fact and fighting the pressure that we feel in our chest is the necessary step en route to inner peace.
As the book suggests, there is no way to avoid this conflict but rather you need to decide whether you will fight through it or put out a white flag and surrender to your lies.
One of the greatest aspects of this title is that it takes a whole other approach on the three enemies that Jesus Christ taught his principles about.
Thus, John Mark Comer opens a discussion on how the modern world, society, and the common man analyze the concept of flesh, the devil, and the world.
To be honest, we were all pretty emotional while reading the book, mostly because it allows the reader to reach deep within and realize the constant tug-of-war between what the modern world suggests and the spirituality that we all seem to undermine.
With that in mind, we consider Live No Lies to be a classic title that any Christian believer should take a look at.
The hardcover is published by Waterbrook and comes in 336 pages. It is set at 5.43 x 1.09 x 8.28 inches and is highlighted by an elegant design. The only issue we have with it? The fact that the book has several repetitions.
Still, the topic that it addresses and the narrative voice of John Mark Comer make it a piece that you should read.
Pros
- Comes in three different formats – audiobook, Kindle, hardcover
- Tackles a sensitive topic in a spiritual yet practical way
- Suitable for anyone who wants to find inner peace
- Brings understanding to concepts of the devil, the flesh, and the world
- Elegant hardcover publication set at 5.43 x 1.09 x 8.28 inches
Cons
- Has a few repetitive segments
The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry: How to Stay Emotionally Healthy and Spiritually Alive in the Chaos of the Modern World
It seems that we are living in a constant rush, thinking about the past and future instead of staying present in the moment. It is an issue tackled by the same author who wrote the Live No Lies, John Mark Comer.
Available in a few formats, including Kindle, audiobook, hardcover, and paperback, we would recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn about how to slow down and understand the cause of living in a hurry.
Review
This book seems to be well thought, and JMC writes in a conversational tone that keeps things simple to read.
When it comes to matters of the self, this book speaks to our need to slow down. It’s full of concerns, but it’s also full of practical suggestions for living a slower life.
We have all been moved by Ruthless Elimination of Hurry in more than a single way. It’s chock-full of how-to guidelines for connecting with God throughout your days and weeks, as well as solid biblical research into the rationale for activities.
John Mark created this book after suffering from extreme burnout and despair. It includes the mechanisms he put in place to help him heal and deepen his connection with God.
He followed up the book with a workbook and a series of short videos on his website to assist you in getting started with these disciplines.
The author presents a brilliant and instructive criticism of modern Western culture with a delightfully basic set of applications that harken back to some of Christianity’s first grace rhythms.
His insights are astute yet relatable, as he talks politely as a cultural participant attempting to navigate the complexity of our turbulent world.
We particularly liked how he used the spiritual disciplines of quiet and isolation, sabbath, and minimalism in a readable yet profound way.
Published on October 29th, 2019, this book has 304 pages in a hardcover edition and is set at 5.5 x 1.2 x 8.2 inches in size. The only downside is that there may not be enough Psalm citings/proverbs.
Other than that, it is a spiritual classic that any modern man/woman should read.
Pros
- Comes in a variety of formats – audiobook, Kindle, hardcover, paperback
- Offers lessons on silence and solitude
- Potentially life-changing explaining the importance of staying in the moment
- Highlighted by a conversational writing style
- Offers a wide variety of spiritual exercises/disciplines
Cons
- Not enough Psalm citings/proverbs
Seeing Beautiful Again: 50 Devotions to Find Redemption in Every Part of Your Story
Written by Lysa TerKeust, a New York Times bestselling author, this book focuses that we can all push through the injustices and hardships in our life.
It offers a variety of scriptures, exercises, and prayers that can be used along with the 7 Day Prayer Miracle to regain faith and stop feeling abandoned.
Review
Similar to the aforementioned books, this one comes in a few formats, including audiobook, Kindle, audio CD, and hardcover. The latter was published on March 31st, 2021, by Thomas Nelson and is set at 6.32 x 1 x 8.32 inches and 288 pages.
One of the greatest points is that each of the 50 devotions is written by Lysa. You can feel that it is something coming from her heart, and the passion is palpable.
The devotionals are short yet packed with wisdom. We weren’t able to read one at a time but followed one after another and took a bunch of notes. I feel like I’m rewriting the book since I have so many notes.
Each devotional and practice is unique and written on such a personal level and with such depth of knowledge and experience that it elevates themes to new heights.
After reading it a few times, we can say that it is a great choice for any person who is currently hurting and needs words of encouragement.
The fact that Lysa gets straight to the point and writes as she understands every problem you might have, makes it such an enlightening book.
Yes, the hardcover book could be sturdier, but for the given price, and considering the featured content, it is a worthy title.
Pros
- Features a variety of devotions, exercises, disciplines
- Offers words of encouragement
- Focuses on the idea of getting through life’s hardships
- Easy to read, written in an understanding tone
- Comes in a variety of formats – audiobook, audio CD, Kindle, hardcover
Cons
- The hardcover isn’t as sturdy
Holding On When You Want to Let Go: Clinging to Hope When Life Is Falling Apart
Moving on with our list of the best Christian faith books, we don’t want you to miss out on this Sheila Walsh masterpiece.
Coming in a variety of formats, including audiobook, Kindle, hardcover, and paperback, it is a spiritual title that anyone who seems to be losing hope should get their hands on.
Review
Published by Baker Books on September 21st, 2021, and set at 5.98 x 0.94 x 9.06 inches and 240 pages, it is a classic that can be read on a daily basis for encouragement and spiritual enlightenment.
The highlighting point of this book is that Shelia goes right to the point of locating the Lord in the middle of all the terrible news and unprecedented worldwide loneliness. The book is intended to help us comprehend His love so much better.
Shelia braids a rope of hope with great care. She focuses more on God’s love for her than on her melancholy, and she does it in a way that allows the reader to perceive those flashes of hope.
God is the proper aid, but how can He be that help when he appears so far away and silent? It is something that the writer tackles with a sensitive yet practical approach.
Shelia talks about it a lot in the book, in ways I didn’t understand or think about. She brought new light on lonely, desperate times like the last few hours that Jesus spent on the cross.
Sheila understands how to get right to the point and make the reader feel as though she’s speaking directly to them. Her dependence on God above all else is inspiring and just what we all need to hear.
In other words, it’s for everyone who seems to be losing their hope and wants to let go of everything.
Keep in mind that Sheila does repeat some of the devotions from her previous books. Still, reminding yourself of the earlier realizations is mostly a good thing.
Pros
- Available in four high-quality formats – audiobook, hardcover, Kindle, paperback
- Offers words of encouragement to distressed
- Explains the concept of solitude and loneliness
- Discusses Jesus’s last hours on the cross, prayers in the Gardens of Gethsemane
- Written in a soothing and conversational tone
Cons
- Repeats devotions from previous books
You Are Never Alone: Trust in the Miracle of God’s Presence and Power
Last is another book that comes in four different formats, including an audiobook, Kindle, hardcover, and paperback.
Set at 240 pages, written by Max Lucado and published by Thomas Nelson on September 15th, 2021, the 6.38 x 0.88 x 9.6 You Are Never Alone piece is something that any Christian believer should consider reading.
Review
Max Lucado utilizes Jesus’ miracles to show that we are never alone on our path through life. From the first miracle of turning water into wine, miracles of Jesus are recorded in the Gospel of John, demonstrating God’s Presence and Power.
The writer demonstrates God’s Presence in our lives in both happy and terrible times through his readable paragraphs and tales.
In addition to that, we love that it focuses on the practical application of Scripture to everyday occurrences and present situations in our life. With reflection questions in each chapter, it is an engaging book that we could read for hours at a time.
Reading through the miracles that Max has witnessed offers a whole other approach to the Christian faith. Similar to the titles mentioned above, we consider it a classic for all of you who are feeling abandoned and need words of encouragement.
The highlighting point is that Max presents and focuses on God’s work that may not be as obvious from time to time, considering the state of affairs that we are living in.
Our issue? The fact that the questions for reflection make up for more than 72 pages, which is a bit too much. Apart from that, it is a title worth every penny.
Pros
- Comes in four modern formats – Kindle, audiobook, paperback, hardcover
- Highlighted by personal tales and insights
- Includes a wide variety of questions for reflection
- Words of encouragement to those feeling lonely
- Addresses God’s work in daily occurrences
Cons
- Reflection questions take 72 pages of the book
Wrap Up
As Christian believers, we would recommend that you read all of the five mentioned titles. Our personal favorite is The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry: How to Stay Emotionally Healthy and Spiritually Alive in the Chaos of the Modern World, as it addresses the biggest issue of modern times. Second choice? Seeing Beautiful Again: 50 Devotions to Find Redemption in Every Part of Your Story, which showcases how to fight through injustices and life’s hardships.
